    Materials:

    Waxed-cardboard beverage carton
    Craft knife
    Hot glue
    Thin dowels (3/8")
    Scissors
    Craft foam
Permanent markers (or optional: acrylic paint)
    Brushes
    Spray shellac

    1. Take a clean, empty beverage carton and cut it in half lengthwise (figure A). You should have two long rectangular boats. Ask an adult to help you cut carton if needed, as the top fold can be hard to cut through.

    2. Cut five squares of craft foam for the sail and base.

    3. Hot-glue four stacked squares together.

    4. Push a hole in center of stacked foam pieces ( figure B).

    5. Insert dowel into hole and hot-glue in place. Hot-glue the fifth piece of foam to the top of the dowel for a flag (figure C).

    6. Hot-glue mast to the inside bottom of boat.

    7. Place a bead of glue around the top edge (the one that you cut) of the boat to seal and waterproof your boat (figure D).

    8. Decorate with permanent markers or acrylic paint.

Tip: Always have an adult around when using tools that have sharp edges, and when using hot glue.

All products can be purchased at craft, hardware, and all-purpose stores nationwide.
