Origami mini-light covers are fun to make. Due to the complexity of this project, please click on this image to watch a video of the entire project.

Origami is a form of Japanese paper folding.

    Materials:

    8 1/2" x 11" white or light-colored paper
    Clear tape
    Colored markers
    Scissors
    Clear tape
    Mini-light string

    1. Starting with one sheet of paper, fold one corner down diagonally to side (figure A). Cut the bottom rectangle off, making a triangle (figure B). Open the paper up and fold it diagonally the opposite way to make an "X." Open it again.

    2. Fold two opposite sides in on themselves to create a triangle. You should now have one center point and four end points (figure C). Fold the loose edges up on themselves to make a point, and make sure you do this on both sides of the paper.

    3. One at a time, fold two end points up to meet the center point. Flip over and repeat for the other side. You will now have a square.

    4. One at a time, fold two side corners into the middle of square. Flip over and repeat for the other side (figure D). You will now have a six-sided figure, like a long diamond.

    5. On each side there will be two triangles at one end of the figure. Fold this triangle back over the center section. Fold it in half again to create an even smaller triangle.

    6. There will be a little pocket in the center section. Tuck the small triangle in the pocket (figure E). Repeat for other three sections.

    7. Now, fold the pocket sides together (against each other), revealing the smooth side of the paper box. Draw and color decorations with magic markers on the smooth sides.

    8. Cut a very tiny amount off the folded tip to create a small hole when opened.

    9. Now, with one big burst of air, blow your box open (figure F). Continue to blow and crease edges until you have a box. Tape top edges to secure box. Insert over lights!

    10. Make a lot for a festive look and string mini-lights (figure G) through them.

Tip: Never leave lights on unattended.

Products are available at craft and hardware stores nationwide. No special products are needed.
