Creating your own customized cash box is fun and easy. DIY Kids host Kent Lindsey and the DIY Kids explain how.

    Materials:

    8" x 7" x 2" cigar box

    2' length of 2" x 1/4" lightweight wood

Small latch, available from a hardware store
    Six 3/4" brads

    Spray paint, any color

    Wood glue

    Decorative stamps and sticky-backed letters

    Tape measure

    Carpenter's square

    Small flat-head screwdriver

    Sanding block and sandpaper

    Pencil

    Hammer

    Hand drill

    Hand saw

    Clamps

    Safety glasses

    Painter's mask

    1. Remove loose paper and labels from the cigar box (figure A) so it will have a smooth finish when painted. Set it aside.

    2. Measure the piece of 2" by 1/4" wood into three sections, each 3" long (figure B), at one end of the wood. Take the other end and your cigar box, and measure the inside width of the box. Mark the wood with the inside-width measurement; this piece will form a divider for your cash box (figure C). Cut the three 3" pieces and the divider at the marked lines (figure D). Sand the edges of each piece.

    3. With a tape measure, find the center of the divider lengthwise and, using a carpenter's square, mark a corresponding line on the wood. Now find the center of each half, and mark them as well, dividing the wood into quarters (figure E). Make two dots on each of the three lines to mark the placement of the nails (figure F). Use a hand drill to drill pilot holes at the dots.

    4. Nail each of the three small pieces of wood perpendicular to the divider at each of the three marked lines, using the pilot holes as a guide (figure G). Glue the divider into the cigar box, using plenty of glue on the bottom and the edges of the divider. Place it in the bottom of the box, pressing firmly to create a tight fit (figure H). Let the glue dry.

    5. Take the box outside, and put on safety glasses and a painter's mask (figure I). Spray-paint the entire box, inside and out.

    6. After the paint is dry, add the latch. Place the top of the latch in the middle of the box's top, and mark with a pencil where the screws should go through the holes in the latch (figure J). Pound a nail into the marked spots, just deeply enough to create a starter hole for the screws. Screw the latch in place (figure K). Repeat these steps for the bottom of the latch, making sure the bottom and top line up for a good fit.

    7. Decorate the cash box with stickers as you like (figure L).
