Building a rack to hold your fishing gear is easy and fun. DIY Kids host Kent Lindsey, guest expert Penny Kent and the DIY Kids guide you through the steps for making your very own customized fishing rack. Materials: 6" x 18" x 1" pine board Three hooks, with accompanying screws Decorative stones or jewels 1 1/2 yards of 3/4" rope Wooden decorations of your choice Snap-type wooden clothespins Sticky craft glue Acrylic paints in colors of your choice Phillips-head screwdriver Hand drill and bits Hand saw Sandpaper and sanding block Pencil Tape measure Two clamps Two pieces of scrap wood Safety glasses - With a parent's permission, begin by preparing the pine board for the base of the rack. Cut the board to size with a hand saw (figure A) or have it cut to size at the hardware store where you purchase the wood.
- Sand all the edges of the board to eliminate rough spots, using sandpaper and a sanding block (figure B).
- Measure the board to determine the placement of the hooks. Measure approximately 1/2" from the bottom of the board, making pencil marks at 4", 9" and 14" (figure C). The goal is to space the hooks evenly across the board.
- Place a hook at each of the marks with the hook-end down, and use a pencil to mark the two holes where screws will be driven to hold each hook (figure D).
- Set the hooks aside, and drill pilot holes at all six marks, using a bit approximately the same size as the screws (figure E).
- Now you're ready to paint the board (figure F). Once you've painted all sides of the board, set it aside and allow it to dry. Apply a second coat, and let it dry.
- Prepare your wooden decorations. A fish design is perfect (figure G), but you can use any kind of decorations as long as each has a flat back so it will stick securely to the board. Paint your decorations as you like, and set them aside to dry.
- Paint a snap-type clothespin (figure H), which will hold your fishing pole.
- Add the hooks to the board (figure I) by lining up the hooks and the pilot holes (figure J) and driving the screws that hold the hooks in place.
- After securing the hooks, glue on your decorations. Use a lot of glue so the decorations won't fall off (figure K). Place them wherever you like on the upper portion of the rack (figure L).
- Glue the painted clothespin to the upper corner of the rack (figure M).
- Glue the rope around the outer edges of the rack, using a generous amount of glue (figure N). An extra pair of hands can help get the rope around the board and hold it while you put on the clamps.
- Clamp the rope in place, using two pieces of scrap wood to hold the rope against the sides of the rack (figure O). Leave the clamps in place, and let the rope dry on the rack overnight.
- Glue on decorative stones or jewels for fish eyes, or decorate your rack in any way you wish (figure P).
