Building a beanbag-toy table and bench is a piece of cake and offers you hours of fun with beanbag friends. And they match the beanbag bunk bed also demonstrated in episode 102 of DIY Kids. Host Kent Lindsey explains how easy it is to make both pieces. Materials: Two 7" x 9" rectangular wooden plaques about 3/4" thick Four 6"-long Early American furniture legs with screws attached 12" length of 1" x 2" scrap wood 1/8" wooden dowel Carpenter's glue Tape measure Pencil 1 1/2" finishing nails Claw hammer Hand drill with bits Hand saw Sanding block and sandpaper Sponge paintbrushes Acrylic paint - With a parent's permission, start to make the table by cutting off the last knob of the furniture legs (figure A). Save two of them for the bench feet.
- Draw an X at each corner of the bottom of a 7" by 9" rectangular plaque where you want to place the legs of the table.
- Drill a hole at each mark about the size of the screw that came in the furniture leg (figure B).
- Fill the holes with wood glue, and screw on the legs.
- For the bench, draw a cutting line the long way down the middle of the back of the second 7" by 9" plaque and cut (figure C).
- Cut the back legs of the bench from the scrap wood. You'll need two 5 1/2" sections.
- Line the back legs up on the back side of one of the plaques (figure D). Trace around the edge to mark the location.
- Mark a spot for a nail at the top and the bottom of each back leg. Drill pilot holes, and nail in place (figure E).
- Add the seat of the bench by lining up the other half of the plaque with the legs and back of the bench so it sticks out like a seat. Mark the nail holes, drill pilot holes, and attach the seat with two or three nails (figure F).
- To attach the front feet to the bench, place the two leftover knobs from the furniture legs in place on the bottom of the bench seat. Draw a circle around the knobs to mark their place. Make an X in the middle of the circle.
- Drill a hole in the middle of the circle about 1/2" deep. Use a drill bit the same size as the dowel.
- Drill a hole the same size in the middle of the two knobs.
- Trim two 1" pieces from the dowel with a coping saw. Fill the holes in the knobs with wood glue, and place the dowel inside. Put glue in the bench-seat hole, and put the other end of the dowel in it. Allow to dry.
- Sand the feet to even up the piece. Then apply acrylic paint and let dry. Now it's time to serve tea.
