A tin-can luminaria is a fun, easy-to-make candleholder with a punched-out pattern on the side. Add a wire handle, and you can hang it outside. When you light the candle in your luminaria, you can see the punched pattern glow in the dark.

Craft expert Janie Scholes explains how to make a luminaria to light up your backyard.

    Materials:

Empty tin can that can hold a votive candle
    Scissors
    Marker
    Pencil
    Water
    Old towel
    Hammer
    Large nail
    Votive candle
18-gauge wire or other sturdy wire
    Wire cutters

    1. Get a parent's permission to do this project. Then wash and dry the empty can, being careful around the top edge, which may be sharp. Remove the label.

    2. Fill the can almost to the top with water and freeze overnight.

    3. With a marker, draw a design on each side of the can (figure A).

    4. Place the frozen can on a towel on top of a sturdy surface such as a table or the garage floor.

    5. Place a large nail along the design on the side of the can, and tap with the hammer. The nail will make a hole in the can, but the block of ice will prevent the can from collapsing. Continue tapping holes around the design. You can space them about 1/2" apart until you have what looks like a dot-to-dot decoration (figure B).

    6. Make two holes near the top of the can, on opposite sides. You'll thread the wire through them (figure C).

    7. Let the ice melt, then add the wire. You can twist it around a pencil for a curly look. Cut it long enough so you can secure it at each end (figure D).

    8. Add the candle.

    9. With a parent's help, light the candle.
