DIY Kids host Kent Lindsey, project expert Lindsay Nussbaum and the DIY Kids show you how to create a fabulous refreshment stand that's fun to build and could even be profitable.

    Materials:

Tri-fold science board, available at school-supply stores
    8 1/2" x 11 1/2" chalkboard with wooden border
    Chalk
Acrylic paints in your choice of colors
Wooden letters with sticky backs that spell the word refreshment
    Masking tape
    Scissors
    Sponge brushes
    Popped popcorn
    Plastic 16-ounce drinking cups
    20" sticky-backed VelcroB.
    Pencil
    Ruler
    Sticky glue
    Colorful round office labels
    Two medium-size self-adhesive hooks
    2' x 5/8" wooden dowel
2 square yards of fabric of your choice

    1. Place your science board flat, cut an arch in the center of the middle fold ( figure A), and discard the cutout piece.

    2. Cover one side of the science board with acrylic paint (figure B), and set aside to dry.

    3. Prepare your chalkboard for painting by applying masking tape to the inside edge, where it meets the wooden border. This will prevent paint from getting on the chalkboard (figure C). Paint the wooden border with any color acrylic paint. After the border is dry, make a checked or striped pattern by tearing small pieces of masking tape and placing them an equal distance apart on the painted wooden border (figure D). Paint the open places with a contrasting color, and when the paint is dry, remove the masking tape strips. You'll have a patterned border.

    4. Paint the wooden letters a variety of colors for fun and eye-catching appeal (figure E). Set them aside to dry.

    5. Cut colorful plastic cups in half lengthwise, from top to bottom (figure F ), and decorate with round office labels to create a polka-dot pattern (figure G).

    6. Generously cover the cut edge of your cups with sticky glue, and attach the cups to the painted sides of your science board along the arch (figure H). Glue popped popcorn above the rims of the cups to create a fun "popping" effect (figure I).

    7. Cut two pieces of Velcro the same length as two opposite edges of the chalkboard (figure J). Remove the covering from the adhesive, and attach the Velcro to the chalkboard. Attach the other side of the Velcro to the science board along the arch on the opposite side of the cups and popcorn. Write whatever message you want on your chalkboard, using chalk, then attach the chalkboard to the science board with Velcro (figure K).

    8. Remove the protective covering from the back of the painted wooden letters, and place the letters on the science board to spell refreshment over the arch (figure L).

    9. No sewing is required to make the curtain for your refreshment stand. Simply fold the edge of the fabric over the dowel, and use sticky glue to glue down the edge, creating a pocket (figure M).

    10. Remove the protective backing from the plastic hooks, and stick them to the back of the science board (figure N). Make sure the hooks are slightly above the arch and lined up straight across from each other so your curtain will cover the archway hole and hang straight. Hang the curtain on the hooks (figure O), and you're ready for business.
