Have a blast making pizza faces and all kinds of pizza creations, including sauce, with vegetables from your garden. Vegetables can inspire a lot of fun with one of most kids' favorite foods: pizza. We've even got a recipe for pizza you can eat for dessert. Pizza Faces Materials: Prepared pizza crust Tomatoes Zucchini Red bell pepper Yellow bell pepper Yellow squash String cheese Grated pizza cheese - First, check with a parent to get permission. Then start with a prepared pizza crust, or use bagels or thick round bread as a crust.
- Make a pizza sauce from two or three medium tomatoes. Wash the tomatoes, then cut them into quarters, and squeeze out the extra juice and seeds. Place the pieces in a blender.
- Pinch off pieces of herbs that smell good to you and that you think will taste good together. We used oregano, basil and chives. Add the herbs to the blender (figure A).
- Chop the tomatoes and herbs in the blender until well mixed, then pour into a microwave-safe dish, cover and heat on high for 1 1/2 minutes to let the flavors blend (figure B).
- Spread the sauce on the pizza crust, and decorate any way you like: ticktacktoe (figure C) from string cheese and vegetables, a shredded-zucchini-and-cheese bagel (figure D) or a funny pizza face (figure E) -- whatever looks good to you. Squash can be used for eyes, red pepper for a nose and pepperoni for cheeks. Cheese makes great hair. Give it a try: the results are delicious.
Dessert Pizza Materials: Pizza pan Refrigerator sugar-cookie dough Bite-size pieces of fruit 1 cup sugar 8 ounces softened cream cheese 1 teaspoon vanilla extract - Mash the sugar-cookie dough into a pizza shape (figure F). This can be a sticky process, so dip your fingers in water to help.
- Bake at the suggested temperature for 5 minutes, or until the dough is a light-golden color.
- Make sweet "pizza sauce" by mixing sugar, cream cheese and vanilla extract in a bowl until well blended. Spread the sauce over the crust (figure G).
- Decorate the dessert pizza with fruit -- pineapple pieces, grapes, strawberries and blueberries. Or for a tropical twist, use kiwi fruit, star fruit, strawberries and blackberries (figure H). Now serve and enjoy.
