Host John Greviskis gives a few tips on what to look out for when shopping for a used outboard motor (figure A). First, you want to ask a few questions to the person selling the motor: - What year is it? It's best to buy less than five years of age.
- How many hours does it have? 1000 hours is considered high, try to stay around 500.
- Why is it for sell? The owner may have traded in for newer technology.
- Have their been any repairs? If so, what kind and who did the repair.
- Is the motor still under warranty? If so, for how long?
There are a couple of tests that you can do, or have done to check for trouble. The first test is called a compression test. The other test that can be performed is to look at the gear case oil. If it is milky white, then water has found its way inside and may have caused damage.
