According to family history, Dana Williams took his first ride in a boat at the age of three weeks -- and had a great time! So it's little wonder that the singer-guitarist, a member of the country band Diamond Rio, tries to spend as much time as he can on his boat out in the middle of the lake.

One important fact to remember about boating is that although it's a fun way to relax, it can't be undertaken lightly. Important safety considerations apply to boating, whether you're tooling around on the lake or big-game fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Below, Williams shares tips on boating safety with DIY:

    1. You must have a life preserver for everyone on your boat. Life preservers are rated Type-1, -2 or -3, depending on whether they will keep your head out of the water or whether they will keep you from turning face-down when wearing one.

    2. Have a bilge blower installed in your engine compartment (figure A) for ventilation.

    3. Keep a well-stocked first-aid kit on your boat at all times.

    4. Always keep a whistle on your boat so you can signal for help. (A caveat from Williams: Keep the whistle in the glove compartment -- otherwise, "If you have a 6-year-old son, he will whistle you to death!")

    5. Attach the keys to your boat to a float so they won't sink.

    6. Always have a working fire extinguisher on your boat. (Keep in mind that fire extinguishers must be recharged, so you should check yours at the beginning or end of each boating season.)
