The anchor is attached, and now it's time to enjoy the water. Host John Greviskis shows you the proper way to deploy an anchor in this final segment.

    1. First, you'll need to detach the ground tackle (anchor) from the anchor chocks.

    2. Pull out the anchor along with the chain.

Tip: When you're working with the anchor and chain, always be sure to take it under the bow rail, not over it.

    3. Before you learn about the proper way to deploy an anchor, it's important to know what scope (figure A) is. For example, if your boat is in 10' of water, you'll need to set out at least 50' of line to set a temporary hook. You'd need to set out at least 70' of line to permanently make sure you're anchored to the bottom.

    4. Deploy the anchor by making sure it's parallel (figure B) with the surface of the water. The chain will then sink it down to the bottom.

    5. Toss the anchor and chain into the water -- out at least several feet from the boat to make sure you don't hit the body.

    6. Once the chain sinks to the bottom, pull back on it to secure the anchor.

    7. Tie off the other end (the anchor rhode) on the deck of the boat using a figure eight formation (figure C).
