Host John Greviskis explains the two main classifications of boat hulls.
- A planing hull (figure A) will climb out of the water and plane over the surface when accelerating. This type of hull is good for pulling skiers out of the water and for offshore fishing boats that want to get to their fishing grounds quickly.
- The second type of hull is called a displacement hull, which sits down in the water and pushes or displaces the water away from the boat. Sailboats and Trawlers (figure B) will have this type of hull. Typically, boats with a displacement hull are used for long-range trips and are slower moving.
