Installing trim tabs may sound like a complicated process. Host John Greviskis tries to make installation simple by giving you easy to follow directions.

Installing the Trim Tab and Actuator

    1. Start by setting the hinge to the trim tab on the dead rise where it will be installed.
    2. Mark out the holes with a pencil where the screws will be placed (figure A).
    3. Remove the hinge and drill out the holes using a 3/16" drill bit. Drill perpendicular to the transom.
    4. Countersink each hole and fill with marine grade silicone sealant.
    5. Slide the tab into place, leaving it parallel with the bottom of the transom.
    6. Attach the actuator to the tab with two screws.
    7. Next, place the actuator against the transom and draw an outline around the base.
    8. Set the actuator down and tape the manufacturer's template on the transom, over the outline.
    9. Drill holes for the mounting hardware with a 3/16" drill bit (figure B).
    10. Drive in the number 12 screws into place with a screwdriver.
    11. Wrap the threads of the fittings with Teflon tape to keep parts from seizing to one another and attach to the actuator foot.

    Installing the Hydraulic Pump

Tip: Install the hydraulic pump in a place that will provide it shelter from the elements (figure C).

    1. Attach the pump onto the fiberglass using four stainless steel, self-tapping screws.

    2. Run the hydraulic lines underneath the center console.

    3. Add Teflon tape to each fitting, and then connect to the hydraulic pump.

    4. Fill up the hydraulic pump with two quarts of hydraulic fluid.

    5. Install a set of rocker switches at the console (figure D). Most manufactures will provide a template for cutting out the holes needed for installation.

Tip: tape off the console with low contact adhesive tape before cutting. This will help keep the edges from chipping.

    6. If your console is wood, seal the holes with epoxy before installing the rocker switches.

    7. Run the wires from the switches to the terminal block. Each wire should have a ring terminal (figure E) crimped into place and heat sealed before attaching. This will seal it from corrosion.

    8. Tie in the wiring coming from the hydraulic pump to make a complete connection.
