Host John Greviskis installs a set of four stainless-steel, gunnel-mounted rod holders into his project boat.
To mount the rear rod holders, mount the holder straight back toward the water, then position the holder behind it at a 45-degree angle, away from the boat so that it doesn't tangle with the other line.
- Measure 18" up from the transom and lay down a mark. Then measure across the gunnel, finding the center and make another mark. This is where you will install the rod holder.
- Using a 2-1/2" hole saw, start cutting straight down, then take it the rest of the way in on an angle, matching the angle of the rod holder (figure A). The rod holder should now fit flush with the gunnel.
Safety Tip: Always use safety glasses and wear a dust mask when cutting into fiberglass.
- Next, seal the exposed wood with epoxy to prevent decay. While wearing rubber gloves, mix the base and the hardener together then apply to the wood (figure B) with an artist's paintbrush. Once the epoxy is dry, you are ready to set the rod holder in place.
- Mark where the mounting hardware will be installed. Take out the rod holder, and then using a 3/16 inch drill bit (figure C), cut three holes going through the gunnel. Next, countersink each hole to prevent spider cracking.
- Place a good amount of silicone sealant into each hole, then place the rod holder into the hole. Set the screws, then place the washer over the bolt, add the nylon nut and tighten everything down using a 7/16" socket and drive.
