Shower curtains are the design element most commonly used to establish the color scheme and pattern in a bathroom. Create a great new look in your bathroom with these do-it-yourself ideas from DIY Decorating & Design host Nancy Golden.

Make a soft terrycloth shower curtain by stitching together large bath towels (buy the largest size to make sure they reach the floor). Add grommet holes for hanging the curtain, or easier still, forget the holes and hang the shower curtain with easy-to-attach drapery clips (figure A).

A tablecloth or any favorite fabric can be used to create your own designer shower curtain. Shower-curtain dimensions are 72" by 72", so find a tablecloth already finished to those dimensions, or hem a favorite fabric for a quick bathroom makeover.

A lace drapery panel (figure B) backed with a clear plastic liner and hung from a beautiful drapery rod adds elegance to a country-French bathroom. Or use a colored liner to add a pop of color.

Be daring, and use a heavy drapery fabric such as a rich, dark velvet in front of a clear liner. Embellish with a tassel (figure C) or pretty ribbon.
