Installing a Multi-Head Shower: Replacing Drywall in the Closet From "Weekend Remodeling" episode WKR-109

In the final segment of this episode, host Fuad Reveiz replaces a piece of cut out drywall.

Prep Work, Remove Old Showerhead and Replace Tile = 3 hours
Open Up Shower Wall and Rough in the Lower Plumbing = 4 hours
Reinforce Shower Wall, Caulk Tile and Secure Shower System to Wall = 3 hours
Replace Dry Wall in Closet = 4 hours
Total hours spent on project = 14 hours over two and a half days

Materials:

multi-head shower
silicone sealant
pencil or felt marker
socket wrench with sockets
tape measure
drill and bits
level
blade screwdriver
Philips screwdriver
hex wrenches
1/8" spacers
rubber float
shims
adhesive tape
hammer
skill saw
circular saw
rotary tool
2 x 4's
2 x 2's
drywall and tape
drywall tools

1. Install a couple of 2 x 4's between the studs and a couple of 2 x 2's on the sides of the 2 x 4's (figure A) so that the drywall can be attached to the top cut of the drywall.

2. Attach the drywall piece that you saved earlier with drywall screws.

3. Apply a thick layer of mud on the joint. Then apply drywall tape over the first coat. (figure B)

4. After that dries, apply another coat. Spread the mud away from the joint so you can start feathering the seam.

5. Sand the joints down and blend the edges out.

6. Spray an aerosol textured drywall compound on the sanded wall. Let it dry out a little and then "knock it down" by placing a 12-inch knife and drag it in order to match the look of the closet wall (figure C).The great thing about working in a closet is that it doesn't have to match perfectly.

   Expert Tip: Whether your walls are faux finish or actual texture it is always best to practice the application a few times before you try to match the new application to the old.

7. Give the wall a new coat of paint, replace the trim molding and put everything back in place.
