With the wood molding installed, the next items on the project list for the bathroom renovation are installation of a window blind, hanging a large decorative mirror and, finally, adding some decorative accessories.

    Window Blinds

Sarah will be installing a set of common vinyl blinds (figure A) that come in a variety of widths to fit almost any window. Left just as they are, the blinds will be too long for the window. However, it's a simple matter of shortening them once they're installed.

    Steps:

    • Install the small cube-shaped brackets into the inside corners of the window. One of the two open sides faces straight out, and the other toward the center (figure B).

    • The blinds unit fits in the brackets with the strings facing toward the room (figure C).

    • Secure the blind in the bracket with small plastic pieces that slide into the brackets.

    • Attach the long plastic wand to the blind controller as directed in the manufacturer's instructions. The wand is used for opening and closing the blind slats.

    • The process of shortening the blinds is easy if you follow the instructions and diagrams that come with the blinds. Drop the blinds as far as they will go -- so that the bottom rests on the windowsill to determine the appropriate length.

    • Remove the plastic retaining tabs from the bottom piece for adjusting the length (figure D).

    • Next, slide out the larger bottom piece and cut the strings to the proper length (figure E).

    • Remove the excess slats and discard them (figure F).

    • Replace the bottom piece into the last rung (figure G).

    • The string ends are tied and pushed into holes under the last rung (figure H).

    Installing the Mirror

Installation of the oversized bathroom mirror has been saved until near the end. The metallic frame will tie into the overall scheme of brushed chrome, blue and gray.

    • Sarah and her father to secure picture-hanging wire tightly to the holders on the back of the mirror (figure I).

    • Two 40-pound hangers (figure J) are used to support the mirror. One is nailed directly into a stud, the other into the wall. The two hangers will provide plenty of strength to hold the mirror in place. They also make it easy to align.

    • The positioning of the wall hangers is measured carefully to ensure the desired placement of the mirror.

    • The mirror is carefully placed on the hangers (figure K) then adjusted to be sure that it hangs evenly.

    Finishing Touches

The final decorative touches for the new bathroom include the hanging of some carefully chosen framed prints (figure L) and the placement of the decorative accessories (figure M) and towels (figure N) that Sarah has selected. She has chosen dark blue accessories to offer contrast against the light walls.

Sarah's assessment of the bathroom once the last finishing touch has been added: "100 percent improved."
