    Tools:

    3/4" low rpm drill
    Soft bristled brush
    Roto zip

    Day One

Note: If you're going for a basic pedestal sink, most home stores have a variety on hand that you can take home the same day. If you want something more unusual, however, you need to allow time to order it. Host Paul Ryan chose a console table sink (figure A) for this project.

Note: Remember to check your local plumbing and building codes before you begin!

    1. Take down the mirror, and shut off the water by closing the valves on the hot and cold water supplies.

    2. Break the seal on the P-trap (figure B) by loosening the compression nut with channel-lock pliers. Be sure and put a bucket under it because it will be full of water.

    3. Disconnect the supply lines with an adjustable wrench.

    4. Cut around the valves with a roto zip (figure C).

    5. Loosen the screws and pull the vanity out. The remaining piece of the cabinet will break off with the channel-lock pliers.

    6. To remove the toilet, turn off the water supply and flush the toilet until the tank empties as much as possible.

    7. Vacuum or sponge out the rest of the water from the tank, and plunge out the rest of the water and vacuum again.

Tip: Be sure to use a wet dry vacuum -- not a household vacuum.

    8. Remove the bolt caps and unscrew the bolts.

    9. Disconnect the water supply line to the toilet.

    10. Lift the toilet off and then temporarily plug the sewer pipe with a plastic bag until it's time to install the new toilet.

    11. To finish, scrape the wax seal from the flange (figure D) and lift off the black ring.

    12. Turn off the electricity before you remove the light fixture. Remove the light bezels and then take off the cover and disconnect the wires. Remove the base.

    13. Take measurements to determine the placement of the sink and backer board.

    14. Use a utility knife to cut through the drywall. Break through the drywall (figure E) to expose the studs.

    15. Cut a 2x4 to size and screw it in place to support the basin.

Expert Tip: When installing a free-standing sink, it's important to add structural supports inside the wall to keep the sink from moving around and loosening the plumbing connections.

    16. With the drywall cut to size, fit it in place and mark the studs so you will know where to put the screws.

Note: Make sure the stud framing is sound and secure. Repair it if needed.

    17. Tape all the seams with drywall tape.

    18. Layer on the mud (figure F) and wait for it to dry.

    19. To tile the floor, put down a thin layer of thinset with a notched trowel and then screed the thinset off with the notched edge (figure G). These grooves ensure even placement of the thinset and a new bond.

    20. Set the tile in place and let it set.

    21. Sand the freshly patched wall.

    22. Roll on new metallic silver paint.

    23. Grout the tile.

    24. To smooth the joints, use a smooth rubber-faced grout float. Push the grout in at an angle (figure H) so it's flush with the tile.

    25. Wipe the tile with a clean sponge to get the excess grout off the face of the tile. Rinse after each pass until the tile is clean.
