Following the interior restoration, the next step in the complete restoration of the Alfa Romeo is the installation of the reconditioned convertible top. Earlier in the restoration project, the top was removed from the vehicle, the cloth top and rubber components were detached, and the metal frame was cleaned, sanded, prepped and repainted. Following is a list of steps highlighting the reinstallation of the top.
- The first step is the installation of the header piece at the top of the windshield (figure A). This entire assembly was removed from the car earlier, and was cleaned and refurbished prior to reinstallation (figure B).
- Once the metal strip has been fastened using metal screws, the clips and brackets that hold the closed top secure, and hold the sun visors. The rearview mirror is installed by simply snapping it into place (figure C).
- The convertible top is pre-fit prior to actual installation, making certain that it lines up properly with all of it's fastening points (figure D).
- Bolts are put in place, but the top isn't fully installed until it has been checked a few times for proper operation (figure E). Once it has been determined that the fit and operation are right, and that it can clip properly to the top of the windshield, the frame is fastened securely with its mounting hardware.
- Fastening the top includes the attachment of tension springs (figure F) that keep the convertible top tight as it retracts.
- With the convertible top frame installed and adjusted correctly, carpeting is installed so that it covers and conceals the top mechanism (figure G). The carpeting is glued in place using spray adhesive, according to the steps described in the earlier segment on interior restoration. A folded trim piece conceals the cut edge of the carpet for a finished look.
- Once everything is installed, the top is closed and checked a final time for proper closure using the clips at the top of the windshield (figure H).
In the segment that follows, the restoration is finished up with the addition of new performance wheels and tires.
