It's time to inspect the floorboard of the car to make sure time hasn't ravished it too much. Make sure there's no hidden rust or damage before continuing with this restoration project.

    1. First, remove the seatbelts. As you take them out, be careful because now that you're down into the chassis of the vehicle (figure A) there could be moisture, rust and other problems.

    2. The rubber mats peel away over the pedals easily.

Restoration Tip: For any rubber area that doesn't come up easily, use silicone spray to loosen the rubber.

    3. Once again, be sure to take photos as you disassemble the flooring and panels. They will be invaluable in figuring out how to re-assemble everything.

    4. Peel the carpeting away (figure B) and carefully look at the floor pan for rust. Be sure to get every inch of insulation out of the floor area to be able to see the floor pan properly.

    5. Lay down the new flooring/carpeting (figure C) and notice how -- even in this pre-fit stage -- great it looks.

Restoration Tip: Manufacturers now have kits for pre-fitting floors for classic cars. Be sure to follow the instructions.

    6. Pre-fitting is important in that it tells you if all the pieces are included and in the right place.

    7. Even though the pre-fitted flooring pieces have insulation, it's important to add more insulation throughout the flooring and backing. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the insulation.
