What to Look for When Evaluating the Car's Interior

    • Check the visor for splits in the material and mildew damage (figure A).

    • Make sure the dash is in good condition. Note that Alfa Romeo's have a metal dashboard, and the car restored for this show had one that needed no cleanup. It was in great condition.

    • Inspect the steering wheel for any damage or wear and tear.

    • The foot pedals on this model (figure B) will have to be replaced. It's vital that your brake and gas pedals and the clutch are in ultimate working order before driving the car.

    • Look for tears in the seat upholstery (figure C). It's rare when an old classic that needs to be restored doesn't have some upholstery problems.

    • It's important to remember when inspecting upholstery to make sure the foam underneath is intact.

    • Usually the carpeting is in bad shape and will need to be replaced. That is definitely the case with this 1965 Alfa Romeo.

    • Make sure the rubber stripping around the interior door openings isn't dried out and beat up from age and chipping away. If so, it will need to be replaced.

    • Don't forget the door panels (figure D). Check them for mold and mildew, and remember to check the metal handles, which are usually chrome. They'll basically need a good polish job.
