Joy Macdonell has been taking pictures and crafting with photos since childhood. After earning an undergraduate degree in psychology and a Master's in social work, she spent 10 years as a social worker. Her professional experiences convinced her of the great importance of friendships and family relationships, and she realized that scrapbooking was the perfect way to celebrate and memorialize these values.Macdonell began her career in scrapbooking in 1996 and was the co-owner of the first scrapbook store in the Washington, D.C., area. It was as a storeowner that she began developing Scrapbook Design University ® (SDU), a national education program taught at local scrapbook stores that teaches beginner through advanced croppers the essential scrapbook theories and principles of design. Today she conceptualizes, writes and teaches all the SDU courses to EK Success Elite Stores in a state-of-the art classroom facility.
In addition to crafting on DIY Scrapbooking, Macdonnell has had her story featured in Better Homes and Gardens magazine and is furthering her retail teaching efforts by writing articles for Scrapbook Retailer Magazine. Over the course of the past two years, she has enjoyed being part of the EK Success family. She and her husband, Duncan, are the parents of two children, Joy and Devin.
