  • Automotive Quick Tip: Lug Nuts
  • From "Ask DIY"

    advertisement

If your car has aluminum wheels, you may notice that the lug nuts can loosen over time, At any rate, you'll need to check them periodically. Here's the proper way to tighten them: First, tighten them in a star pattern. Repeat this two more times to make sure each of the lug nuts is tightened to the torque specified by the manufacturer. You should also inspect the threads to make sure they're clean and free of any corrosion. If you find any debris, clean them with a wire brush. While you have them off, put a little anti-seize lubricant in the lug nuts so you won't have difficulty removing them the next time. Be sure to use only lubricant made for lug nuts -- any other kind could make them loosen while you drive!
