- Carry a notebook with a list of the pros and cons of your current car and note comparisons to the test-driven car.
- Try to take at least 30 minutes and, if possible, test-drive with a companion rather than a salesperson. A friend is better in a passenger role as he or she will maintain an unbiased opinion of the car.
- Try to drive along a route that includes different types of road surfaces in order to determine how the car handles on a variety of terrains. Also, try to take a familiar route as it will let you concentrate on the car rather than where you are going.
- Determine if the car fits you. When in a comfortable driving position, make sure that you're at least 10 inches away from the steering wheel and that you can still fully depress all the pedals. Make sure you can reach all the controls without straining, and that the controls are easy to use and the displays easy to see.
- Make sure you can see well in the car and that there are no serious blind spots. Finally, make sure to pay attention to all of the vehicle's characteristics -- how it rides, handles, accelerates, and stops -- as well as how quiet it is.
