- When you check your transmission fluid, you need to look at the level of fluid, the color and smell. If you can smell a burnt smell, it is time to change the fluid. Your transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles or whatever your owner's manual suggests. If you let the transmission fluid get to the point where it is burnt, it may allow damage inside the transmission because it loses its ability to lubricate and remove heat. Those factors will allow wear inside the transmission.
- When your transmission fluid is new, it has a red dye tint that you can see through (figure A). The color should remain that way for the first 10 to 20,000 miles if the transmission is in pretty good shape. Older transmission fluid is a darker, sludgy color.
- Inside an automatic transaxle (figure B) are clutch packs and clutch facings that come in contact with each other making a lot of heat as they are engaging and disengaging. You also have roller bearings and other components that need constant lubrication and heat removed.
- The automatic clutch (figure C) is called the torque converter. It is constantly creating heat in that fluid as it is going through the motions of some slipping always going on inside the converter and the fluids being moved around. That creates dynamic movement and heat by itself.
- Inside the transmission is the valve body (figure D); it is what you are controlling as you use your shift lever and it can become sludged up if the fluid is not changed on a regular basis.
- When you change your transmission fluid, the filter will capture some particles of debris that can contaminate the transmission. There is a magnet in the base of the pan and when you change the fluid it captures any metal shavings or particles. If you change the fluid yourself, inspect it to see the amount of metal shavings it is catching. A small amount is normal over the course of mileage, but a large amount of shavings may be a sign that you are having some kind of mechanical problem in your transmission.
