  • Replacing a Windshield Washer Pump
  • From "Talk2DIY Automotive"
    episode DTTA-125

    • Typically, on most vehicles, the windshield washer pump is located at the base of the windshield washer fluid reservoir. The motor is usually a universal motor (figure A). You have the reservoir side and the side that lets the fluid come out and go to a tube that runs up to your windshield washer distribution system and contact points for the connector.

    • You will access this from underneath your vehicle. On the electric windshield wiper motor, there is a connector that has to be disconnected. A small pin has to be released (figure B) and then you will be able to disconnect the motor.

    • You can confirm whether or not the motor is okay by using a 9-volt battery. Just touch the ends of it to the two terminals on the motor (figure C). If it is okay, you should be able to hear the motor.

    • If the motor is bad, remove the fluid line from the washer fluid reservoir and then the motor will pop right out.

    • There is a rubber seal (figure D) that is on the reservoir and you need to remove it also. The new motor will come with a new seal.

    • Check the new motor out by also testing it with a 9-volt battery to make sure it is okay, then just pop it back in place and reconnect everything.
