    • Because of the environment, -- the "green car effort" -- we want cars that will not let vapors and chemicals go into the environment. R-134A (used to be R-12 Freon) is not to be vented into the atmosphere -- you need a licensed air conditioning technician to do the work properly. You need the right equipment and training as a technician. You can change the compressor yourself; you just can't vent the AC refrigerant into the atmosphere. You have to go to a service technician to evacuate the system and draw out all of the old refrigerant.

    • The AC compressor is similar to the alternator -- it is driven by a drive belt. It is a pump, something like a water pump, and instead of water, it pumps vapor back through the system. It pulls in a low vapor pressure and pumps out a high-pressure vapor (figure A).

    • Inside the compressor (figure B) you would see that you are taking in a low pressure vapor of the refrigerant and the pump moves pistons back and forth as it draws in the refrigerant, and pumps out a high-pressure vapor. As the vapor leaves, it goes into a condenser that circulates the vapor to cool it.

    • If you cool the vapor, it turns back into a liquid and then goes into an evaporator (figure C) that is located under the dashboard of your vehicle. The low-pressure vapor goes into the evaporator where it is boiled, and the boiled liquid turns into a vapor and the vapor returns to the compressor to begin the cycle over again.

    • After you have the compressor evacuated by a service technician, you can change the compressor. It requires bolts being removed, removing the compressor, installing new O Rings, and replacing the compressor. You then have to take the vehicle back to the service technician to have the compressor charged with refrigerant.
