- The viscosity (thickness) of the oil in your vehicle reduces over time due to the additive package. The thinner the oil, the more it has pourability. The 10-30, etc. means the weight or viscosity of the oil.
- If you do not change your oil on a regular basis you get dark, dirty motor oil (figure A). Dirty motor oil does not necessarily mean you need to change your oil -- it could be dark due to 500 to 1,000 miles on some cars. What makes it need a change is the wearing out of the viscosity of the oil, the corrosion inhibitors, rust inhibitors, etc.
The dependability of the oil to do its lubricating, is dependent on its additives. Oil is petroleum -- which is rock oil. They start with basic crude, filter it and then put additives in. Once the additives wear out, it is time for an oil change. Go by the owner's manual and even possibly change it 20 to 30 percent sooner and you should be okay.
