    Trailer Hitches

    • There are different trailer hitches and they depend on what you will be towing, i.e. a jet ski (figure A) or a large camping trailer. Trucks have full perimeter chassis -- all the structure you need for towing a vehicle -- the heavy duty requirements are addressed by the truck frame. Automobiles don't all have the same capacity for towing and some vehicles don't have the capacity for towing at all, but most do. You need to check your owner's manual or check with your dealership for the towing capacity of your vehicle.

    • To purchase a vehicle to use for towing, you need to identify the capacity for the vehicle you are buying. Next, you need to identify what you need to tow.

    • The Class 1 trailer hitch is the lowest towing capacity and it tows up to 2,000 pounds of the gross trailer weight (includes trailer and whatever you are towing on the trailer). There is a Class 2 trailer hitch and it goes up to 3500 pounds. The trailer hitch classes goes all the way up to a 5 -- i.e. a Class 3 goes up to 5000 pounds and is usually used for a camping trailer.

    • You need to make sure that you select the right hitch for the size of what you will be towing.
