When to Replace a Battery Cable

    • Run your hand down the full length of the battery cable (figure A) to see if there are any lumps. If there are lumps, it is a sign that there may be a defect in the cable and you need to replace the cable.

    • If there is corrosion or rust at the end of the battery cable (figure B), you would need to replace the cable.

    • If your car is original and you are restoring it, you can get a cable from an after market part store. If you want the car to run really great, you can look at a cable with a bolt on the terminal end instead of a crimped on the terminal end -- that would really help you out.

    • You can use a battery terminal connector cleaner (figure C) to clean rust and corrosion from the terminal. You can also use baking soda and water.

    • To help keep the terminal clean, you can buy small discs (figure D) to place below the terminal on the battery to help keep rust and corrosion down to a minimum.
