To Adjust Carburetor or Fuel Injector In Case of Idling

    • When a vehicle is idling, the throttle bore on a carburetor will close up almost completely and allows a little bit of air to go through. If it shuts too much, you are not allowing enough air. You can adjust the idle speed on your carburetor. On typical carburetors, there is a screw near the throttle assembly (figure A) and you need to tighten that screw. This will open up the throttle more.

    • Different types of fuel injection designs have different hardware. Generally, they are an air valve with just air going through because the fuel injectors provide the fuel. You can adjust the screw at the stop point, but it may be a temporary fix. What may be causing the malfunction on a fuel injected vehicle is as electric signal from the Throttle Position Sensor (figure B) -- also known as a TPS. A malfunction in the TPS could cause the computer to get the wrong signal. This would require servicing for a diagnostic test with a technician.
