- Headlight adjustment is something that you can do yourself. Some vehicles require a special tool to adjust the headlights, but many have either a screw or bolt. The independent shops and dealerships use special devices that allow very precise headlight adjustments.
You should not have to adjust your headlights unless you have had a collision or have had repair done to the front of the vehicle. You can do a ballpark adjustment with this process. First, you need to locate the adjustment knob for the headlights (figure A). Measure the distance from the ground to the center of your headlight. Go out 20 feet and put a line (figure B) at the exact height that would be one foot lower than the center position of your headlight. Adjust your lights until they hit that line.
