Assembling the New Steering Rack- To install the new lock nut (for the tie rod ends) onto the new rack, carefully measure from the groove in the inner tie rod to the back of the lock nut. Transfer that to the new rack and install the new lock nut at that position. Keeping the lock nut in place, thread the new outer tie rod end onto the rack and tighten it down. It's important to double check the tie rod measurements.
- To avoid twisting the boot when rotating the tie rod end, pull the boot locking clamp out, rotate the tie rod end towards the front and re-install the clamp to secure the tie rod position.
- Repeat the steps on the other tie rod end.
Apply fresh grease to the two halves of the rack mounting bushings and install them into the rack. It's a good idea to grease the bushings to prevent squeaking. Grease and install the metal sleeve that fits into the groove of the bushing (figures D and E). Install the bushings and sleeve on the passenger side of the rack. Now the rack-and-pinion is all put together and you are ready to put it on the car.
