Installing the Amp Rack and Sub Enclosure

In this first phase of the project, Andrew begins the installation of the upgraded sound system as he installs a new amp and sub enclosure in the area where the spare tire used to live.

    Materials/Tools:

    amp rack
    sub enclosure
    painter's tape
    marker
    drill with non-stepped bit
    safety glasses
    mask
    silicone

Safety Alert: As a standard safety precaution, always disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable before you begin work on any electrical or mechanical components.
Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection and follow proper safety precautions when working with power tools or pneumatic tools. Also wear eye protection any time you are working underneath a vehicle.

    Steps:

    • Disconnect the negative cable from your battery.

    • To begin, make sure any old equipment has been removed from the car.

    • The new equipment mounts in the spare tire area, so begin by pulling up the factory floor panels.

    • The knobs that secure the factory panel will be transferred to the new pieces, so you'll have to remove them from the panels.

    • Next, remove the spare tire and the storage tray from the passenger side.

    • The amp rack is a little larger than the spare tire, so trim the foam liner so the rack fits nicely. dtrk313_ampr1

    • Once you have a good fit, transfer the new locking knobs onto the new panels. The amp rack and sub enclosure both come with rubber washers to help isolate the components from vibration. dtrk313_sub-ampEnclosure1

    • Place the components into position to check the fit, and then apply painter's tape in the area you'll want to drill the mounting holes, and temporarily place the amplifier in the rack to mark its mounting holes.

    • Next, do the same thing for the speaker and the speaker grill.

    • Take the parts to a workbench and mark any additional holes for the wiring.

    • Once everything is marked, you can drill out the holes. Be careful not to scratch your painted surface during the install. Also, use fresh, non-stepped drill bits to keep from cracking the painted finish.

    • Safety Alert: Be sure to wear safety glasses and a mask to protect yourself from any fiberglass dust.

    • When you're drilling fiberglass, use very light pressure so the bit almost floats on the surface until it starts to grab the material.

    • When all of the holes are drilled, clean the dust away and remove the tape.

      The amp and subwoofer, INSTALLED.

    • Apply a dab of silicone to the propel nuts to hold them in place and then push them into the mounting holes from underneath.

    • Then hook up the speaker. Carefully place it into the enclosure and attach it with the machine screws supplied with the kit.

    • The grill goes on next. Be careful to keep the screwdriver steady so you won't scratch the enclosure or damage the speaker.

    • After the speaker and grill are mounted, you can take the parts back to the car.

    • Connect all the wiring to the amplifier, and then mount the amplifier to the amp rack using the supplied self-tapping screws. Secure the amp rack by turning the knobs into the locked position.

Finally, place the enclosure in the car, hook up the speaker cable from the amp, and lock it down using the factory fasteners.

In the next phase of the project, Andrew Totolos begins fabrication of the mounting bar for the speaker pods then welds the speaker mounting plates to the bar and hooks up the speakers to complete the installation.

Important: Included in this summary are the steps in this automotive procedure as shown in the episode. These steps are general guidelines that are applicable to most vehicles. With any particular car or truck, there may be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type and brand of upgrade-kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive repairs, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions that come with your kit or replacement parts.
