There are a number of accessories available that will help secure your vehicle against theft or burglary without installing an elaborate alarm system. Steering-wheel locks attach to your steering wheel and lock down to keep the steering wheel immobile, thus making it impossible for the car to be driven. These are made of hardened steel so they would be extremely difficult to cut off. Locks are available in a number of styles, some of which incorporate extra hooks (making them effective against thieves who would simply cut a slit in the steering wheel and remove the lock) and airbag protectors (figure A). Since airbags are so expensive, they have become a prime target for theft. A variation that also protects the airbags as well as the vehicle is a disc-style airbag protector that works in conjunction with a standard steering-wheel lock (figure B). Another target for thieves are wheels and tires. Locking lug nuts, such as these installed on an external spare on the back of a Jeep, prevent removal of the wheel. Scratches around a lug nut are often an indication that someone has attempted to remove the locking nuts. A specialized and unique wrench socket (figure C) is required to remove the locking nuts. A variation on the steering-wheel lock is a model that attaches the steering wheel to the brake pedal (figure D), thus immobilizing both the brake pedal and the steering wheel. A collar lock (figure E) fits around the steering column. It has openings to accommodate the turn-signal and windshield-wiper levers, but the side covering the ignition is solid. Once it's installed on the steering column (figure F), there's no way to access the ignition switch until the collar is removed.
