Part 4: Add Hitch to Car

The track trailer is ready to roll, but first Andrew has to add a hitch to the back of the project car and hook up the wires for electricity.

Materials and tools used in this phase of the project:

    jacks
    hitch
    welder with safety gear
    electrical tape
    split loom

Safety Alert: As a standard safety precaution, always disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable before you begin work on any electrical or mechanical components.

    Instructions:

  • Jack up the rear end of the car.

  • Slide the supplied carriage bolts with washer through the rear holes in the subframe of the car.

  • Use a jack to support the hitch as you bolt it into place.

  • In the center, a U-bolt wraps around the factory tie-down loop. Before tightening down the U-bolt, slide in the tow ball and secure it with a cotter pin.

  • If Andrew was working on a tow vehicle, he could plug a plug-and-play harness into the taillights. Since he's working with a Civic, however, he'll have to find the correct wires and splice them in himself.

  • Disconnect the battery.

  • Attach the red wire from the trailer harness to the positive battery cable, and the white ground wire to the negative terminal.

  • Identify which wires go to the brakes, the parking lights and the turn signals.

  • Strip the ends of the wires, and connect them to the harness.

  • Once all the wires are matched up correctly, solder the connections and wrap them in electrical tape.

  • Pop the bulbs back into the housings.

  • To neaten things, wrap the wires in split loom before closing the trunk.

  • The new trailer is ready to be hooked up.
