  • Scion TC: On-Board Video Camera for Autocross Racer
  • A Scion SC gets outfitted for some cinema verite at the autocross track — with a driver's point-of-view digital video camera mounted to the headrest.

    episode DTRK-411

    Video-Shooting Tips

The camera mount has been built and installed in the project car. Now it's time to head to the track to capture some footage for a do-it-yourself track movie. In addition to the point-of-view camera inside the car, Andrew uses another camera to capture scenes of the race as he walks around the racing area.

    What you'll need:

    mini digital video (dv) camera
    camera mount
    tripod

    Tips:

    • When the driver is ready to begin capturing video, he simply touches the record button on the remote that has been placed in the center console (figure A).

    • Using a second camera, Andrew walks around the racing area and shoots footage of the project car racing around the track (figures B ), as well as shots of the spectators, other cars competing in the race and signage identifying the race (figures C and D).

    • Andrew also uses a tripod to capture some steady shots of the race. These will make for a more professional-looking movie when edited in with the other footage.

    • Once you've captured the footage you want, remove the camera and the camera mount from the car.

Andrew does some digital editing of the raw track-video footage.

    Video Editing Tips

The footage of the race has been captured, so now it's time to turn all those clipped sections into a smoothly edited do-it-yourself movie.

    What you'll need:

    computer with video-editing software
    unedited footage of race

    Tips:

    • Import the footage from the camera onto a computer.

    • Using editing software, condense the footage and choose shots that you know you'll want to use, such as crowd shots, cars, and your car's run around the track. Give each clip a name, and organize them accordingly.

    • Edit your piece. Be sure to use a mixture of inside- and outside-the-car shots.

    • Use the title tool in the editing program to create a title page for the beginning of the video, and add some music to provide a soundtrack for all the cool shots.
