Nitrous Bottle InstallationNow that everything is installed under the hood and inside the car, it's time to bring in the nitrous bottle. For the project car, Andrew chose a ten-pound bottle that when filled up will have ten pounds of liquid nitrous oxide inside.
- The nitrous bottle should be equipped with a liquid-filled pressure gauge and a pressure-release valve. Andrew drills a hole in the bottom of the trunk to allow excess pressure from the nitrous bottle to vent outside of the car.
- Andrew installs the nitrous bottle inside the car. The bottle should be mounted at an angle facing the front of the car with the label side up to allow accessibility to the pickup tube that is at the bottom of the tank.
- Set the bottle in position, mark where it will go, and drill down through the trunk (figures A and B).
- Vacuum away any debris from drilling the holes (figure C).
- Use quality hardware to mount the bottle.
- Before tightening everything up, attach a blow-off tube that complements your nitrous bottle. The tube will vent any high-pressure tank relief outside the car.
- Secure the bottle to the car, and the nitrous system install is complete.
Test-Track: Tips and ProceduresWith the nitrous system installed and the drag radials are on the car now it's time to test the results of the project with hopes of quicker times down the eighth-mile track.
- First, to get an accurate reading of the times before and after the modifications, take a few runs down the track with the street tires and without the nitrous.
- Give the car a once-over to make sure everything is operating at peak performance. After looking at the engine, check the brakes for excessive pad wear. Check for cracks in the rotors.
- Pull out the spare tire to rid the car of the extra weight.
- After the test run, install the drag radials (figure D) and arm the nitrous system.
- For consistent runs, check the nitrous bottle valve every time before you hit the arming switch. When you purge first, you'll know it's on. When it's not in use, turn the bottle off to protect the solenoids from wear and tear.
- At the staging line, once the tank is armed, purge the line. Purge and purge until you see a white plume of smoke?then go!
