  • Infiniti G35 Track Upgrade: Nitrous Injection System
  • From "Tricked Out"
    episode DTRK-408

    (Continued from page 3)

Install Electronic Controls and Nitrous Bottle

The nitrous system has been installed, and now it's time to add the electronics that control the system. Andrew will install both an arming switch and a purge button. He'll also add a full-throttle switch, which will release nitrous bursts. Finally, he'll install the nitrous bottle.

    Material and tools:

standard shop tools, including needle-nose pliers
    arming switch, from nitrous kit
    purge button, from purge kit
    drill with bits
    fuse taps
    wire ties
    nitrous bottle
    hardware for mounting nitrous bottle
    blow-off tube for nitrous bottle

    Nitrous System Electronic Controls

Andrew mounts both the arming switch, which will activate the nitrous system only when needed, and a purge button, which will clear out the fuel lines, right next to each other so they're easily accessible to the driver.

    • To begin the install, remove the lower trim piece and disconnect the dash panel switches.

    • Take out the side panel and mark the placement of both the arming switch and the purge button.

    • Drill two holes, and screw in the purge button and the arming switch.

    • Now Andrew installs the full-throttle switch. When the system is armed, this switch will activate the nitrous once pressure is applied to the car's accelerator.

    • The bracket from the nitrous kit is a universal fit, so you'll have to decide where the bend it so the switch ends up in the correct place.

    • Back some nuts off to remove the gas pedal.

    • Slide the wide-open throttle switch bracket underneath, and tighten it down.

    • Bolt the pedal back in. Use needle-nose pliers to bend and adjust the switch so it engages when the car is anywhere over ½ throttle.

    • Now that all the switches are in place, the wiring is next.

    • Find a switched-positive port in the fuse panel, and drop in a fuse tap to provide power to the nitrous system only when the car is running. The other end of that lead connects to the arming switch.

    • When the arming switch is on, it activates the wide-open throttle switch under the accelerator. When the driver accelerates, it signals the main relay, which in turn opens up a direct connection between the fuse panel and the wires that run to the solenoids under the hood.

    • The purge button attaches to the purge solenoid on one terminal and a fused battery lead on the other.

    • Combine all the ground leads and attach them to a solid ground point under the dash.

    • Once all the wiring is hooked up, use wire ties to tidy up the many wires.

    • Replace the kick panel.

    • Run the nitrous feed line back to the trunk by running the hose underneath the trim panels along the driver's side of the car and through the back seat.

    • Once the hoses are in place in the trunk, reinstall the trim panels.
