  • Put the top layer back on and get it centered on the steel. Using several small binder clips, clamp the aluminum down into position and make a punch at one inch in from the corners and the centers of each side.

  • Drill a small hole in at each punch mark through both pieces of metal (figure F).

  • Add nuts to the sides and a couple of corners to hold it in place. Remove the binder clips.

    Tripod for the Display Sign

With the display sign complete, it's time to build a tripod so you can stand the sign up next to the car. For our sign, the best length for supports is about two feet.

    • Clamp the angle aluminum to a worktable and use a hacksaw to cut it to length.

    • Once the lengths are cut, notch out a one-inch tab on the end of each piece. Then drill a hole into each end of the notched pieces.

    • Use bolts to connect all three pieces together. Use vice grips, clamping them together below the bolt.

    • Bend the two outer legs of the tripod out, and line them up with the bolt holes on the sign (figure G).

    • Mark where the bolts are and drill holes into the tripod legs and top. Now it's all ready to assemble.

    • Remove the bolts from the sign, and line the tripod up with the bolt holes.

    • Reinsert the bolts through the legs and the sign.

Stand the sign up to check for proper support (figure H).
