Racng Harness BasicsThe main difference between the old harness and the new one we're installing is the way they mount. The ones in the car before the upgrade are a latch design (figure F)--which is handy if you want to take the harness system in and out of the car, but they're not ideal for this kind of racing application. The new ones we're installing for thus upgrade (figure G) mount to the seat mounting bolts which is much more secure. When shopping for harnesses, you'll have some options. Some come with quick-release clasps which are handy for the types of races where drivers must start from outside the car. Size is another consideration. The straps typically come in 2-inch or 3-inch widths. Three-inch may be preferred for racing; 2-inch are typically more comfortable and better suited for daily driving. Make sure that you have a good safety rating for racing and street driving.

Installing the Harness- Carefully set the seat into place and position the seat back forward.
- Lay the harness in the seat, wrap the lap belts around the back of the seat over the harness bar (figure H).
- Position the mounting end (figure I) and attach them to the rear seat mounting bolts.
- Screw the rear bolts into the floor pan finger tight.
- Torque them down to factory specifications, which can be found in a factory service manual.
- Then remove the seat backwards to install the front bolts, and torque them down as well.
Repeat the process for the other side, and the harness installation is complete.Important: Included in this summary are the steps in this automotive procedure as shown in the episode. These steps are general guidelines that are applicable to most vehicles. With any particular car or truck, there may be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type and brand of upgrade-kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive repairs, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions that come with your kit or replacement parts.
