    Speaker-Enclosure Volume Calculator

In this episode of Tricked Out, host Andrew Totolos installs an acrylic subwoofer-enclosure on a Toyota Celica. For our particular upgrade, we selected 10" speakers and opted for a sealed-box design.

Size of the enclosure is important. Check the manufacturer's recommendations for the proper speaker-box volume to accommodate your speakers and the size of your vehicle's interior. For the proper sound in our vehicle, the recommended volume for each enclosure was 0.8 cubic feet.

To ascertain the proper dimensions and volume for your project, you can use the online volume-calculator below.

    Volume Calculator - Rectangular/Square Enclosures
Measure the outside dimensions of your enclosure and the material thickness, then enter the numbers below to calculate interior volume. **Note: If you used dividers and/or braces, the volume of each divider/brace will need to be subtracted from the interior volume.

    Vented Box or Sealed Box?

When installing a subwoofer and enclosure, consider the type of music you'll be listening to. For standard fare and most rock-music genres, and allowing for loud volumes, a sealed box may be preferable. A sealed box contains the sound and forces most of the sound frequencies to be transmitted via the speaker cones, resulting in a "punchier" sound. For bass-heavy styles like hip-hop, dub, dance or trance, you may want to consider a vented box. The vented box allows for fuller, deeper-sounding bass by enabling the bass-frequency sound waves more time to expand before they reach your ears.
