There are a few simple steps that you can take to help ensure that your sunroof looks good and stays in proper working order for a long time. To clean the glass on your sunroof without leaving streaks or discoloration, use a non-ammonia -based glass cleaner. If you live in an area with hard water that tends to leave spots, try using ordinary white vinegar to remove them.
Aside from the glass, you want to maintain the condition of the rubber gasket around the outside of the sunroof (figure A). Keeping the gasket in good condition is critical to ensuring a watertight seal and preventing rainwater from leaking into the vehicle interior. Clean the rubber gasket with a mild detergent or car-wash soap (figure B) and rinse it with water. Once it's clean, condition the gasket with a silicon-based lubricant.
Important: Do not use petroleum-based lubricants on the rubber gasket. These may cause the rubber to deteriorate or stick to the glass and become damaged when the sunroof is opened.
You may also want to clean the black metal frame that goes around the outside of the gasket. This area is prone to getting wax discoloration when you wax your vehicle. Clean it a soapy water (avoid cleaning solutions that contain alcohol).
With manual sunroofs, periodically check the mounting hardware (figure C) and the rear hinge/clip (figure D). Tighten the screws that hold these in place as necessary to help prevent leaks.
For sliding power sunroofs, it's important to keep the tracks clean and free of debris (figure E). Dirt or grit in the tracks may cause premature wear on some of the internal parts. In the tracks are drain holes that sometimes become clogged. Clean these using a cotton swab dipped in cleaning solution.
To ensure that the sunroof glides smoothly, apply a lithium grease to the tracks with a cotton swab (figure F).
