When you're driving at highway speeds, a bug and stone deflector serves a dual purpose. It protects the front edge of your hood from dings and paint chips caused by stone-hits, and it redirects the wind upward so fewer insects come into abrupt contact with your windshield.

Some styles attach to the hood permanently with screws, but the model we used in this demonstration requires no screws or drilling (figure A). It simply clips on and attaches with VelcroB. adhesive tabs. The deflector can easily be removed so that you can clean beneath it whenever you wash the car.

    1. To prep for installation of the deflector, first clean the top of the hood with soapy water. Dry with a clean cloth.

    2. Test fit the deflector by sliding it onto the front of the hood, making certain that it is centered properly. Gently close the hood and check that there is proper clearance for the deflector with the hood closed.

    3. With the deflector fitted onto the hood, note the locations of the mounting tabs. Remove the deflector and clean those mounting-tab locations with alcohol.

    4. Reposition the deflector so that it's seated properly on the front of the hood, then pull and remove the tape backing from the mounting tabs (figure B).

    5. Press the deflector firmly in place on the hood.

    6. Leave the deflector in place and allow the mounting tape to cure for at least 24 hours.
