Installing Wind and Rain Deflectors on Side Windows

Wind and rain deflectors for your side windows are an easy and functional addition for your vehicle. Besides providing a sleek look, they reduce wind noise and allow you to drive with your window cracked open even in the rain. Deflectors are available in a number of styles and are fabricated from either plastic or steel. You may want to have yours painted to match the color of your vehicle.

Installation may vary from one brand and style to another. Some affix permanently while others simply clip on. The VentvisorB. attaches to the window frame using double-sided tape.

    1. Before installing, clean the surface of the window frame with alcohol to ensure a good bond.

    2. Peel off about an inch of the tape backing to use as a pull-tab during installation (figure A).

    3. Remove the plastic triangular cap inside the front door at the front edge of the window. Remove the three small mounting bolts underneath the cap that hold the side mirror in place (figure B). This allows the side-view mirror to be angled out of the way during installation.

    4. Insert the front-end flange of the deflector between the cap and the window channel and position the deflector against the window frame.

    5. With the deflector positioned properly, peel away the tape backing and press firmly to ensure good adhesion.

    6. Retighten the mirror mounting-bolts and replace the triangular cap.

Another option is the WeatherTechB. Wind and Rain Deflector. These have a thin flange that simply inserts directly into the window channel. There's no need for tape or other adhesives.

    1. Insert the thin flange of the deflector's leading vertical edge into the section of the window channel closest to the side mirror (figure C). The bottom of the front-edge of the deflector should rest on the top of the door outside the weather strip.

    2. While grasping the front portion of the deflector and holding it in place, bow the deflector toward you just enough to allow the flange at the rear edge of the deflector to be inserted into the window channel at the upper right corner of the window (figure D).

    3. Working from front to rear, carefully work the remainder of the deflector's flange into the window channel.

    4. Making certain that the end of the deflector nearest the mirror is resting properly on top of the door weather strip, carefully raise and lower the window several times to help fully seat the deflector in the channel.

Repeat the steps for the other windows. Once finished, leave the windows fully closed for at least 24 hours.

    Installing a Sunroof Wind Deflector

Once considered a luxury option, sunroofs are now a common feature on many vehicles, including economy cars. Two primary problems with sunroofs are wind buffeting and excessive wind noise at high speeds. A wind deflector is an easy-to-install accessory that will provide a noticeable improvement. They come in a variety of styles and colors (figure E). Some are mounted permanently with screws or clips. In our demonstration, we installed one that mounts with double-sided mounting tape.

    1. Clean the roof with car-washing soap and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

    2. Clean the area of the roof along the edge of the sunroof -- where the deflector flange and mounting tape will make contact -- with alcohol.

    3. Position the deflector in front of the sunroof so that it is centered from side to side and equal distance on both ends from the windshield. Mark the position of the deflector on the roof by outlining the front edge with a grease pencil or masking tape (figure F). Once the deflector is in position, you may want to fasten it down with masking tape in a couple of spots to secure it in place while it's being installed.

    4. Pull the tape backing away (figure G) and press the deflector firmly in place. Press firmly all along the flanges of the deflector to ensure proper adhesion to the roof surface.
