Unlike headlights with replaceable bulbs, sealed beams are replaced as a whole unit. Installing one is fairly simple. Our example vehicle (1989 Mazda RX-7) has pop-up headlights, and we replaced the old sealed beams with new halogen ones. A switch inside the car raises the headlight housing without the headlights' being turned on. - To get to the lamp, remove the screws that retain the cowling around the lamp (figure A).
- With the cowling removed, remove the four corner screws holding the light in place. (The screws in the middle of the top and side are alignment screws for adjusting the direction of the beam.) With the corner screws removed, the lamp and retaining band will drop forward (figure B).
- Detach the electrical cable from the back of the lamp (figure C).
- Plug and install the new lamp. Make sure the lettering on the front of the lamp is upright.
- Replace the retaining band and corner screws. Reattach the cowling.
- Check the lights to make sure they work and that the pop-up units work properly.
The process will be similar for most vehicles that have sealed-beam headlights.
