  • xB Rag-Top Conversion: Installing the Frame
  • Scion xB goes alfresco!, Part 3 of 4
    From "Tricked Out"
    episode DTRK-310

    (Continued from page 1)

    [PAGE SEPARATOR]Installing the Frame

  • Now it's time to install the frame. Using the silicone sealant that comes with your ragtop, run a quarter-inch bead around the edge of the roof hole about one-half inch in from the edge (figures K and L).

  • While you're working your way around the rood, you'll also want to run a circle of silicone around the mounting holes to make for a watertight seal.

Important: Silicone will not come out of your upholstery, so make sure your drop cloth is in place while you're performing these steps.

  • When you're finished, carefully position the frame in the roof (figure M) so that it's aligned with the mounting holes, and use even pressure to smooth out the silicone underneath.

  • Next, insert clinch studs through the mounting holes, and use a fender washer and a self-locking nut at each stud to secure the frame to the car (figure N).

  • After all of the studs are secured, use a damp paper towel to clean up any excess silicone on the roof.

  • Run an extra bead of silicone around the frame inside the vehicle to allow for increased leak protection.

Installing the Top in the Frame

Once the frame is secured in place and sealed, the final step in this phase of the conversion is to install the top of the frame.

    • Lift the top with the aluminum rails onto the frame (figures O and P). It's somewhat awkward to handle, so take care not to scratch your roof.

    • Next reinstall the headliner aluminum plate at the rear of the frame with a few screws.

    • Remove the rear clinch studs and align the studs on the ragtop with the holes in the frame.

    • Attach washers and nuts to the top studs from the inside and tighten them down.

    • Then attach nuts to the railing screws along the sides of the top (figure Q).

    • Finally, close and open the top to make sure it's operating smoothly.

In the next and final phase of this project, Andrew installs wiring for the dome light and reinstalls the modified headliner.

Important: Included in this summary are the steps in this automotive procedure as shown in the episode. These steps are general guidelines that are applicable to most vehicles. With any particular car or truck, there may be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type and brand of upgrade-kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive repairs, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions that come with your kit or replacement parts.
