Transfer Measurements to Roof of Car

  • Take a look at how everything is going to line up by taping the template to the headliner inside the car. This will give you a good idea of how to position the top to avoid problems with the sun visors, grab handles and other roof-mounted items (figure E).

  • If you plan to reposition the dome light, make sure to leave a good spot for it.

  • Once you're satisfied with the position, wrap a piece of tape around the top of the doorframe to mark the front of the template above and below the roofline, then carefully move the template onto the roof and position it using the tape mark (figure F).

  • Make sure the roof area is clear of obstructions. Lay a line of tape in front of and behind the template. Measure the width of the roof at each tapeline (figure G) and mark the center points.

  • Align the center marks on the template with those on the roof, and tape it down securely.

  • Measure everything again, and triple check the placement just to make sure.

  • When you're confident everything is lined up correctly, carefully trace around the template with a permanent marker, lifting individual tape pieces as you go.

  • After you have completed the cut line, remove the template and place three or four layers of painter's tape around the outside edge of the cut line to protect the paint (figure H).

Important: Included in this summary are the steps in this automotive procedure as shown in the episode. These steps are general guidelines that are applicable to most vehicles. With any particular car or truck, there may be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type and brand of upgrade-kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive repairs, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions that come with your kit or replacement parts.
