When you're buying a new car, make sure to get a guarantee that it's been factory rustproofed (remember: rustproofing is not the same as undercoating). If you're in doubt of whether it's been rustproofed, you can have it redone professionally.
Wash and wax your car frequently, including the underside. To do this, drive back and forth over a sprinkler. After washing, dry the car thoroughly and leave the doors open until all the water has dripped out.
