Materials and tools:portable DYNO (or take the car to a DYNO testing center)
high-flow fan
DYNO Procedure Basics
All DYNO's measure power a little bit differently, so it's important to do a baseline run to get both "before" and "after" readings with the same car on the same DYNO for accurate results.
- Once the car is strapped to the machine, put a high-flow fan in front of the engine to simulate rushing air as the car flies down the road (figure A).
- An air temperature probe dropped down by the new filter (figure B) will tell the DYNO what kind of conditions you're running under.
- Rather than just doing one run, we did three full-throttle runs through fourth gear, which is the most accurate one-to-one ratio, and averaged the results.
The DYNO ResultsWith all the new airflow mods, both the torque and overall power got a discernible boost. At 6000 rpm, the 350Z picked up 17 additional horsepower, going from 206 hp before the mods to 223 hp after.
The Bottom Line
Cold air intake $340
Plenum spacer $225
Strut tower bar $230
Exhaust system $900
Total = $1695
Savings from installing the mods yourself: $450
